July 27, 2018It’s that time of year again. If you’re like most people the holiday season is typically synonymous with an abundance of partying, eating, drinking, and a lack of exercise. So, we’ve gathered five tips to help make the most of the festivities. They may seem intuitive, but it’s very easy to get caught up in the craziness of Christmas, so read on to find out how you can come out the other side unscathed.
Stay Hydrated
This is especially important on days when the temperature soars in Australia. The easiest way to ensure you are getting enough H20 is to keep a water bottle handy at all times. If you are drinking, try to limit your alcohol consumption by alternating between water and wine (or your choice of liquor!).
Nourish Your Body
Although it can be tempting to make a beeline for the desserts table at a Christmas function, try to ensure you still get your daily dose of fruit and veg (for example, have a nutritious Açaí bowl for breakfast). Don’t skip meals with the intention of saving calories before an event as it can often backfire and lead to overeating later on. It’s also important to listen to your body and not feel guilty. The holidays are supposed to be a time of relaxation and celebration and you won’t gain 10 kilos from a few days of indulging.
Move Your Body
Try to exercise daily during the holiday period, even if it’s only for 20 minutes. It’s true what they say – you will never regret a workout. Staying physically active is not only good for your body, it can reduce stress and improve your mood. So even if you’re not motivated to go to the gym, mix up your routine by walking the dog, going for a bike ride or swimming. Getting your exercise in first thing in the morning is also a great way to ensure that you get it done.
Take Some Time Out
Between finishing off work, shopping, cooking and everything else, it’s no surprise that many people’s stress levels are heightened at this time of year. To avoid burn out, ensure you take some time out for yourself to relax and recharge. For example, read a book, listen to music, watch your favourite Christmas movie, have a cup of tea or do some breathing exercises.
Get Enough Zzzzzz’s
Getting enough sleep each night is just as important as eating well and exercising. Most adults need around 7 to 8 hours of shut-eye to ensure they wake up feeling rested and energised for the day ahead – this is especially true during the busy holiday season. If you have trouble falling asleep try to do something before bed to unwind such as taking a bath or doing some stretches.
