Origin of the green spiky fruit (Graviola)

Native from Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, and other countries from South America, Graviola can also be found in many regions of SouthEast Asia and North Africa. If you like pineapple and mango, then this fruit is for you. The taste is somewhat acidic and sweet, while the texture is juicy and it can be eaten fresh or used to make ice cream, popsicles, juice, custard and drinks.

Benefits

Graviola gives us many different vitamins and minerals essential for our body. It’s a highly rich fruit when it comes to antioxidants and eating Graviola regularly can improve the function of the major systems in your body and give you a more balanced life. No fruit alone can sustain all the nutrients you need, and it’s always a good idea to eat a good variety of foods along the way to enrich your immune system.

  • Folate
  • Vitamin C

  • Zinc

Healthy digestion

Graviola is a VERY rich fruit in fibre. One whole Graviola fruit contains more than 80% of the recommended daily dose for an adult. Fibre helps gut function and is great for people with constipation issues.

Vitamin C

One of the most important antioxidants you can possibly find is Vitamin C, and Graviola is a great source of it. By consuming fruits rich in vitamin C, you’re increasing your immune system and keeping your body stronger against allergies, flus and viruses. We don’t naturally produce vitamin C, so it’s fundamental to have it in your diet and consume regularly.

Stabilises blood pressure

Graviola is commonly used to help control blood pressure. People with high blood pressure may be more susceptible to strokes and heart diseases. While the green spiky fruit is not a medicine neither will it solve heart problems by itself, with a regular consumption of the fruit it is possible to see a small difference and help the treatment that’s already being done. It should never be used as a cure or as an answer to health problems. It’s always good to see a doctor if you’re looking to improve your health.

Keeps the body hydrated

Graviola contains a great amount of water and is great to help with dehydration on hot days or after physical activity.

High in Antioxidants

The more antioxidants a fruit contains, the healthier it will be. By protecting our body from harmful substances called free radicals, the antioxidants play a very important role in promoting health and reducing the risks of cancer and heart diseases, for instance. Free radicals are often created from sun exposure, processed food or cigarette smoke, and are somewhat an inevitable part of our lives, so to balance it with foods that help keep our body cleaner will only bring us more quality of life.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Although limited to animal studies, research has shown that Graviola has anti-inflammatory properties. Acting as a blocker for pain receptors and reducing inflammation in rats. More studies are needed to confirm the human response to it.

How to eat it

A ripe Graviola should be a little yellowish and not dark green. Wash it for a few minutes and then remove the skin (the skin is not edible). Use a knife to do it and then peel it as if it were a banana (only graviola skin is much harder). Cut it into half or into more pieces and remove the seeds if you will (a regular graviola fruit contains around 30 to 200 seeds). Graviola is used and processed into ice creams, pulp juices and other beverages. They can make amazing desserts, turned into a smoothie or be eaten raw, you decide!
