7 natural superfoods from Brazil.

1. Jabuticaba

The jabuticaba tree, found in the jungle areas of Brazil and Paraguay, produces a purple or black fruit called jabuticaba. The fruit resembles grapes in appearance and taste, as it has a soft and juicy flesh.

Besides being a low calorie fruit, the jabuticaba is a source of vitamin C, copper, iron (so it is very beneficial for those with anaemia) and phosphorus.

Its antioxidant and soothing properties improve blood circulation, protect vision, help to stabilise blood sugar levels and regulate bowel activity. Jabuticaba is indicated for diabetics and can cure tonsillitis, asthma, diarrhoea and dysentery. Similarly, several anti-inflammatory properties have been found in the fruits of the jabuticaba tree.

2. Acerola

The acerola is a small fruit, similar to the cherry. It has an acidic taste but not excessively so and is very pleasant and tasty.

They have large seeds, so as they are small you can eat 5 or 10 at once, but please, don’t do that. Be careful.

The main characteristic of the acerola and certainly what makes it one of the most well-known Brazilian superfoods, is the fact that it has a high vitamin C content mainly (although it also has vitamin A). It has up to 20 times more vitamin C than the orange.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for the diet. Among its benefits we find:

  • It reduces fatigue.
  • Contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system.
  • It intervenes in the formation of collagen, a structural component of the bone, skin and blood vessels.
  • It is involved in the synthesis of brain chemicals involved in mood regulation.

In Brazil, the most common type of coconut is the “dwarf coconut” (coco anão), which has a smooth green shell.

Coconut water is commonly used as a drink and as a solution to treat dehydration related to diarrhoea or exercise.

It is also consumed for high blood pressure and to improve physical performance.
