In Australia, people take sports seriously and millions of people watch the National Rugby League, the AFL league, Cricket, the Australian Open Tennis tournament and many other sports which are also very popular worldwide, but very characteristic from the aussies as well.

Most sports in the country are intense, aggressive, and extremely exciting, not to mention all the emotion involved in playing and watching top notch athletes in big stadiums with thousands of people screaming.

Because of the high energy profile of Australia’s top played sports, athletes must follow a strong diet that boosts their performance on the field and helps with the release of strength and endurance, and the food they eat everyday is paramount for reaching and keeping a good shape. Amateurs and casual players can only benefit from adding a few dishes of a swimmer’s everyday diet, for example.

In this article we will be talking about the top 5 most played sports in Australia and about how eating well makes a huge difference on energy and performance for everybody, amateurs and pros.

Rugby

With approximately 170,000 NRL players in Australia, the National Rugby League is an extremely popular sport, and one of the most physically demanding as well. Annually, around 3 million people go to stadiums to watch it and on television there’s an estimated 100 million viewers count, not bad right? It’s one of the sports with the highest body contact in the world, and that’s probably why people love it so much.

AFL

Australian Football is probably the number one sport in Australia, both in spectatorship and attendance. Popularly referred to as “Aussie Rules” by the people, it comes as another intense contact sport and was first played more than 160 years ago in Melbourne and since then, has spread throughout the whole country and now has reached world visibility. The game is incredibly popular in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and in the Northern Territory. The AFL is the main competition of the sport in the country and consists of 18 teams from all of the six states playing a 23 round season, usually from march to september.

Cricket

Cricket is a classical Australian sport and obviously makes our list of top 5 sports played in Australia. Regarded as a national summer sport and played in all states, cricket games fill up stadiums everywhere. It’s already a 200 year old sport and the millions of views only grow as the years go by, with over 7.2 million people watching the sport in 2019.

Swimming

With an estimated 6 million people swimming every year, be it occasionally or regularly, professionally or just for practice, swimming’s first national event dates back to 1894. Swimming is a sport that develops great breath control and being in the water requires a lot of muscle strength.  In 2016, the Australian Championships broadcast reached an audience of 1.3 million people.

Soccer

With a record of around 2 million people currently practicing the sport, soccer comes up as one of Australia’s most popular sports, and it makes sense, knowing that it is also the most popular sport in the entire world. Soccer is popular especially among children and teenagers, being played for almost 50% of this age group. With 2 halves of 45 minutes each, soccer is one of the most aggressive and fast paced sports in the world, where endurance is the key to victory.

Other popular sports

Other very popular sports worth mentioning are Netball, Surf, Golf and Tennis. Each of them gather millions of viewers every year ready to witness high level spectacles. Surfing and tennis championships have gained international attention and are known as a definitive parameter to measure who the best players and surfers in the world are every year.

Nutrition

For any intense contact sport, not only regular exercise is needed. Food intake works directly on making the most out of your training sessions and making sure the nutrients, protein and carbs are in best use for your physical performance. Eating clean is the first rule, and that is: avoid processed foods. Processed meat and chicken take a long time to be absorbed by our bodies and are full of harmful substances called free radicals, also found in cigarettes, tobacco, and formed by excessive sunlight exposure. It’s very difficult to be away from free radicals these days as eventually you will end up eating some fast food, eating some colorized candy and be near smokers, so keeping your diet rich in foods that protect you from these substances can make a huge difference.

Fruits are generally great in providing antioxidants and important nutrients that boost performance, so avocado, bananas and blueberries are antioxidant rich fruits that give your disposition at the same time and the latters are easily processed by our body.

Açaí, a tropical superfruit from the Amazon rainforest, has been reaching an incredible popularity in Australia especially among swimmers and surfers as an energy booster and nutrient bomb. With nutrition levels far above most fruits, an Açaí shake before or after sports practice is a great way to fuel or refuel your energy reserve and has been adopted and recommended by athletes and nutritionists as exportation is increasingly growing.

Most of these sports demand a high calorie diet because of the intensity of the games, and carbohydrates must be eaten at the right time in order to avoid the sensation of fullness before practice. It’s important to remember that balance is paramount and you should always look for a nutritionist or a doctor and understand how your body works with the food you eat and what’s best for you and your sports practice.
